SANDY SPRINGS, GA – Today, Aaron Baker, a Jewish parent, digital organizer, and government transparency advocate, has announced her candidacy for Georgia State House District 51, running to represent Sandy Springs and Roswell.&nbsp; As a long-term Sandy Spring resident, Aaron has worked to make Georgia politics more accessible by designing powerful tools that simplify complex legislation and expose the influence of money in politics. Now she is running as a Jewish, openly trans, democratic-socialist candidate to actively redefine what it means to be a sitting state legislator in Georgia.&nbsp; If elected, Aaron would become the first openly trans legislator in the Deep South. Candidates Make Call As $1.89 Million in Sports Betting Spending Flows Into Georgia Democratic Primary Elections.FULTON COUNTY, GA - Democratic State House candidates, Aaron Baker (District 51) and Jeremiah Olney (District 57), are calling on their opponents to reject and disavow support from sports betting corporations and political action committees, including the American Futures PAC, which is owned and funded by DraftKings, a major U.S. sports betting company headquartered in Boston. The American Futures PAC has spent $1,894,274 in individual expenditures in the Georgia Democratic Primary across ten candidates. Among its largest expenditures, the PAC has spent $179,175 supporting <a href="https://estherpanitch.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Esther Panitch</a> (District 51) and $143,331 supporting <a href="https://wherestaceystands.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Stacey Evans</a> (District 57). Evans has also received direct contributions from gambling interests, including the Sports Betting Alliance, MGM Resorts, Caesars, Lucky Bucks, AKS Amusement, World Gaming, and Prizepicks, <a href="https://www.followthemoney.org/entity-details?eid=6505514&amp;default=candidate" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">totaling more than $25,000 during her political career.</a>Olney stated, “How much longer are we going to continue selling our democracy to the highest bidder? It’s bad enough that corporations spend millions of dollars every year directly buying up politicians, but this is a dramatic new assault on Georgia’s elections. Predatory companies like DraftKings profit from the desperation of people in poverty by offering them a false glimmer of hope to escape it. Any elected official who benefits from their dark money has a responsibility to reject it, denounce it, and commit to supporting legislation which empowers everyday Georgians to decide our future, not the sports betting industry.” Research has demonstrated that legal sports gambling disproportionately harms low-income and marginalized communities, draining savings and increasing the risk of bankruptcy and debt delinquency. A study conducted by Northwestern University economist Scott Baker and his colleagues found that <a href="https://insight.kellogg.northwestern.edu/article/online-sports-betting-is-draining-household-savings" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">for every $1 spent on betting, contributions to personal investment are reduced by $2.</a> Additional research by UCLA economist Brett Hollenbeck and University of Southern California economists Poet Larsen and Davide Prosperio <a href="https://www.anderson.ucla.edu/sites/default/files/document/2025-05/Hollenbeck_The_Financial_Consequences_of_Legalized_Sports_Gambling.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">found that legalization of online sports gambling increases a household’s risk of bankruptcy by 25 to 30 percent,</a> with the greatest financial harm falling on low-income families.Baker stated, “Our democracy in Georgia is under attack from corporate gambling interests trying to influence our elections and block regulation and taxation of harmful products, and they have already spent nearly $200,000 supporting my opponent in this race. We must call on local leaders to reject dark money from industries that harm communities, as sports betting is linked to compulsive gambling, rising debt, and serious mental health risks, including suicide. Georgia’s future should be decided by its people, not by wealthy executives and corporate PACs protecting profits at our expense. When my opponent accepts this support, it raises serious questions about who she will serve under the Gold Dome, because every dollar spent by these groups is an investment they expect to recoup through legislation, and refusing to disavow this influence shows a troubling disregard for the constituents she has sworn to represent.”Georgia remains one of only eleven states that have not legalized sports betting. However, lobbying and political spending from out-of-state corporations such as DraftKings have intensified pressure on lawmakers to pass sports betting legislation under the Gold Dome. During the 2026 legislative session, <a href="https://www.legis.ga.gov/legislation/71020" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a key House vote</a> to legalize sports betting was rejected 63-98. Every Georgian deserves the right to make private medical decisions free from political interference. Currently, state law bans most abortions after six weeks, long before many people know they are pregnant, and limits access to gender-affirming care. These restrictions disproportionately impact women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and rural or low-income residents. Georgia has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country, particularly among Black women, and insufficient access to reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare leaves residents vulnerable. Public Transit That Will Get Us There

Thousands of Georgians work full-time yet still cannot pay for housing, healthcare, food, and childcare. Georgia’s minimum wage is $5.15/hour, well below the federal minimum and far from what is needed for a family to survive. Low wages force workers to take multiple jobs, work long hours, or rely on public assistance, while corporations profit from paying employees far less than their labor is worth. Women, Black and brown workers, and immigrants are disproportionately affected. Raising the minimum wage is crucial for equity, economic security, and community stability. Aaron will push for a living wage that allows full-time workers to support their families and live with dignity. <h3>As a state representative, Aaron will fight to raise Georgia’s minimum wage, strengthen worker protections, support collective bargaining, and expand access to workforce development programs to ensure that no worker is left behind.</h3> <h4>The Problem:&nbsp;</h4><ul><li>Stagnant wages: Georgia’s minimum wage has remained $5.15/hour since 2009, while living costs—housing, healthcare, childcare—have surged.</li><li>Pervasive low-income work: About 40% of low-wage workers earn less than a living wage, forcing them to rely on multiple jobs or public assistance.</li><li>Demographic disparities: Women and people of color make up more than 50% of low-wage positions, reinforcing systemic inequities.</li><li>Economic instability: Workers who earn too little are unable to save, invest in education, or support local businesses, undermining community economies. </li></ul><h4>The Solution:</h4><ul><li>Legislate a living minimum wage: Gradually raise it to $20/hour based on cost-of-living data.</li><li>Protect workers’ rights: Strengthen enforcement against wage theft, unpaid overtime, and unfair scheduling.</li><li>Support collective bargaining: Protect workers’ ability to organize and negotiate for fair pay.</li><li>Tie state contracts to fair pay: Require companies receiving state funding to pay a living wage.</li><li>Invest in workforce development: Fund training programs to help workers move into higher-paying, skilled jobs.</li></ul>

Georgia’s minimum wage is still stuck at $5.15 per hour, leaving the federal $7.25 minimum as the only real floor for pay. That wage hasn’t increased since 2009, even as housing, healthcare, and basic costs have surged. Aaron supports raising Georgia’s minimum wage to $20 per hour so that people who work full time can afford their bills, support their families, and live with dignity.
