SANDY SPRINGS, GA – Today, Aaron Baker, a Jewish parent, digital organizer, and government transparency advocate, has announced her candidacy for Georgia State House District 51, running to represent Sandy Springs and Roswell.&nbsp; As a long-term Sandy Spring resident, Aaron has worked to make Georgia politics more accessible by designing powerful tools that simplify complex legislation and expose the influence of money in politics. Now she is running as a Jewish, openly trans, democratic-socialist candidate to actively redefine what it means to be a sitting state legislator in Georgia.&nbsp; If elected, Aaron would become the first openly trans legislator in the Deep South. She has a long track record of building opportunities for the community to become more engaged with Georgia’s political system, including building two websites - <a href="https://gafasttrack.com/">GA FastTrack,</a> a website that explains legislation in the General Assembly; and <a href="https://www.gafastmoney.com/">GA FastMoney</a>, a website that analyzes the campaign finance disclosures of General Assembly members. “After years of our Georgia State legislature ignoring the real affordability crises people are dealing with, they have chosen to pass anti-immigrant, anti-DEI, and anti-trans legislation to scapegoat people like me. Immigrant families in Georgia face the constant threat of detention and deportation due to Georgia's participation in federal immigration programs and local enforcement practices that target communities of color. Family separation has devastating emotional, educational, and economic consequences. Children may lose caregivers, parents may lose income, and communities lose stability. <h3>Aaron will work to end local participation in federal deportation programs, prohibit racial and religious profiling, and guarantee due process protections, legal representation, and language access for all residents. </h3>Keeping families together is not only a moral imperative—it strengthens the social and economic fabric of Georgia communities. <h4>The Problem:</h4><ul><li>Family separation: Thousands of children are impacted annually when caregivers are detained or deported.</li><li>Racial and religious profiling: Immigrant communities, particularly Latinx and Muslim populations, are disproportionately targeted by local law enforcement inquiries.</li><li>Limited legal support: Many residents face deportation without access to attorneys or language-appropriate resources.</li><li>bDeportation or detention of caregivers creates immediate financial crises for families. </li></ul><h4>The Solution:</h4><ul><li>End participation of local law enforcement with the federal ICE programs: Stop local law enforcement from working with ICE detainers.</li><li>Prohibit profiling: Legislate clear limits on when immigration status can be inquired about.</li><li>Guarantee legal representation: Fund state-supported legal services for immigrant families.</li><li>Ensure language access: Provide translation and interpretation services in courts and public offices.</li><li>Support community integration programs: Fund programs that help immigrant families remain connected, safe, and economically stable.</li></ul>

Everyone in Georgia deserves to live without fear that a traffic stop or trip to work will tear their family apart. Aaron will fight to end local participation in federal deportation programs that target immigrant communities, prohibit racial and religious profiling, and require clear limits on when local law enforcement can inquire about immigration status. She will champion due-process protections, access to legal representation, and language-access standards so immigrant families are not unlawfully detained, exploited, or deported in violation of their rights.

Every Georgian deserves the right to make private medical decisions free from political interference. Currently, state law bans most abortions after six weeks, long before many people know they are pregnant, and limits access to gender-affirming care. These restrictions disproportionately impact women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and rural or low-income residents. Georgia has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country, particularly among Black women, and insufficient access to reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare leaves residents vulnerable. Protecting bodily autonomy is essential for personal dignity, health, and economic stability.&nbsp; <h4>Aaron will work to repeal restrictive laws, expand healthcare access, and protect patients and providers from criminalization.</h4><h5> </h5><h3>The Problem:</h3><ul><li>High maternal mortality: Georgia’s maternal mortality rate is 26.2 per 100,000, higher than the national average, with disparities affecting Black women most.</li><li>Insufficient preventive care: Rural and low-income areas lack clinics providing contraception and sexual health services.</li><li>Restricted abortion access: Over 25% of women of reproductive age live in counties without abortion providers.</li><li>Limited gender-affirming care: Access to hormone therapy or surgical care is severely limited, especially for youth and rural residents. </li></ul><h3>The Solution:</h3><ul><li>Repeal restrictive abortion laws: Restore full reproductive rights in Georgia.</li><li>Fund clinics and telehealth: Support reproductive and gender-affirming services statewide.</li><li>Protect medical privacy: Strengthen laws preventing government interference in healthcare decisions.</li><li>Expand school-based health services: Provide contraception, counseling, and sexual health education.</li><li>Incentivize providers to serve underserved areas: Offer grants and loan repayment programs.</li></ul>

Aaron will work to repeal Georgia’s abortion ban, restore full reproductive freedom, and protect providers from criminalization. Furthermore, Aaron will defend the rights of patients and medical providers to make informed decisions regarding access to all forms of gender-affirming care.

Guarantee Bodily Autonomy

Georgia has seen an unprecedented boom in tech infrastructure, including massive data centers that consume 7 billion gallons of water and 10 trillion watt-hours of electricity annually. While these facilities generate corporate profits, they often raise utility costs for residents, strain local water supplies, and increase environmental risk. Local communities bear the costs while private companies reap the rewards.&nbsp; <h3>Aaron will advocate for the regulated expansion of data centers, ensuring that environmental sustainability, community water and energy access, and economic fairness are prioritized over corporate profit. Data centers in Georgia use 7 Billion gallons of water and 10 Trillion watt-hours of electricity a year, and are poised to raise utility costs for working families. But, they don't have to. Our economy should always prioritize people and planet before profit. We need ensure new technologies are strongly regulated, environmentally sustainable, and economically fair for working people.

People Before Data

Accessible public transit is essential for connecting Georgians to jobs, education, and healthcare. Inadequate transit options force many low-income residents to rely on long commutes or multiple vehicles, increasing traffic congestion and environmental pollution. Georgia ranks 48th nationally in per-capita transit funding, and traffic costs commuters over $6 billion annually. Thousands of Georgians work full-time yet still cannot pay for housing, healthcare, food, and childcare. Georgia’s minimum wage is $5.15/hour, well below the federal minimum and far from what is needed for a family to survive. Low wages force workers to take multiple jobs, work long hours, or rely on public assistance, while corporations profit from paying employees far less than their labor is worth. Women, Black and brown workers, and immigrants are disproportionately affected. Raising the minimum wage is crucial for equity, economic security, and community stability. Health disparities disproportionately impact Black, Latinx, and low-income communities, making timely care a privilege rather than a right.&nbsp; <h3>Aaron will push to expand healthcare coverage, protect rural hospitals, and ensure healthcare access is equitable, regardless of income, race, or employment status. Schools in low-income and rural areas face the greatest deficits, with shortages of counselors, nurses, and enrichment programs. Essential workers, teachers, nurses, and city workers can’t afford to live where they work. Meanwhile, investors and corporate landlords are buying entire neighborhoods. Legislators have ignored this reality, promoting a status quo that Aaron’s district can't be one for working-class families. But no one should feel priced out of a district they love. <h4>As a state representative, Aaron will fight to end Georgia’s ban on rent control, strengthen tenant protections, end corporate tenant gouging, cap Georgia Power rate increases, advocate for a higher minimum wage, and promote state investment in daycare.</h4> <h3>The Problem:</h3><ul><li>Rising rent has constrained rental affordability. Median housing prices in Sandy Springs have nearly doubled over the last nine years, increasing from $270,000 in 2016 to $415,000 in 2025. This has left, on average, 56% of renters housing cost burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their annual income on housing costs. This statistic is echoed throughout Georgia, increasing traffic congestion, disrupting students’ lives as they experience “rent hopping,” and decreasing Georgian’s overall quality of life.&nbsp;</li><li>The working class has been priced out of their neighborhoods. Aaron’s district can no longer house the very people responsible for keeping cities running. Essential workers, teachers, nurses, and city workers have been priced out of their neighborhoods. Corporations have bought out the market, purchasing low and middle-income homes only to tear them down and replace them with properties worth millions of dollars. Corporations should never come before people.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Georgia’s housing crisis is likely to exacerbate without urgent intervention. The housing challenge is expected to persist with no end in sight, as rent increases annually by 4.2% and home prices appreciate by 7.5% each year. Without urgent action, thousands of Georgia residents in Aaron’s district will be forced to move or become unhoused. </li></ul><h3>The Solution:&nbsp;</h3>As a state representative, Aaron will not only hold leading actors accountable but also work to provide relief for everyday expenses that exacerbate the financial burden of housing. When done right, Georgians can expect to see reduced homelessness, lower crime rates, lower child poverty rates, and increased state and municipal revenues.&nbsp; Specifically, Aaron will:&nbsp; <ul><li>End Georgia’s ban on rent control: Georgia state law prohibits the implementation of rent control, allowing landlords to raise rent as they see fit, with minimum prior notice to tenants. Because of a lack of regulation, Georgians are experiencing the sixth-largest rent increase nationwide. Rent control laws stabilize rent and provide housing stability. As a State Representative, Aaron will work to end Georgia’s ban on rent control and adamantly support legislation that enacts rent control at the city and state levels.&nbsp;</li><li>Strengthen tenant protection: Too often, renters in Georgia live with holes in their walls, non-functioning appliances, mold, and rodents, with little recourse against landlords who fail to repair their homes. Strengthening laws that promote housing stability and protect tenants' living conditions is a crucial step in addressing this housing crisis. As a State Representative, Aaron will work to expand the “Safe at Home Act” to further define what “fit for human habitation” means and clarify the remedies available to a tenant for a landlord’s breach.&nbsp;</li><li>Increase the minimum wage: Workers can only pay their rent and mortgages if they make a livable wage. However, Georgia’s minimum wage is currently set at $5.15 per hour, leaving the federal minimum wage of $7.25 as the only real floor for pay.
